On Wednesday a surprise announcement gathered a crowd on the concourse where champagne, orange juice and snacks were waiting to get them warmed up. President Ali Milani and VP Student Activities Michael Darlow took to the stage to announce major changes for sports clubs and societies.
The biggest announcement was that from September 2017 all sports club and team memberships will be free for all students. Although students will still need to pay the £25 sports federation membership that covers insurance, the overall costs of playing for a team, either socially or competitively have been dramatically decreased.
Brunel is one of the first student unions in the country to provide free sport to all students, a feat that has taken the team nearly 2 years to negotiate with the university, who are providing the additional funding of £200,000 needed.
Societies will also have access to sports facilities for free and social sports will receive a big boost.
VPSA Michael Darlow has this to say following the announcement:
“Sports clubs and the activities they provide to students bring an incredible vibrancy to our campus. For so many of our members our sporting activity is pivotal to their student experience. We are delighted to be able to make our programme of activity accessible to everyone on campus. This exciting news will undoubtedly make Brunel a more active and healthier campus.”
